Size your whole system

The short version

Your daily use and your darkest month decide everything. Put them in and you'll get panels, batteries and an inverter, plus a cost range.

For

With no location, this assumes a dark winter: about 2.3 hours of strong sun a day in the darkest month.

4Solar panels, 410 W1.6 kW total, sized for your darkest month with 10% to spare
148V server-rack batteries2.2 kWh stored · about 4.6 kWh usable each

Two days on your system

Even in your darkest month, the batteries never drop below 71%, and the sun fills them back up every day.

In summer they're full again by 10am, and the extra sun is yours to use.

Full Half
Lowest: 71% at 8am Batteries Sun Night

Starting full at 6pm, the batteries run the night, drop to their lowest around 8am (71%), then the panels make about 2.9 kWh a day in your darkest month against about 2.2 kWh used. After two days they sit at 96%.

Rough one-time cost: $4,000 – $5,000, parts and wiring.

Go deeper: how this works
1

Panels: daily use ÷ darkest-month sun hours ÷ 0.77 (wires, heat, dust) × 1.1 (margin).

2.2 ÷ 2.3 ÷ 0.77 × 1.1 = 1.4 kW
2

Batteries: daily use × days without sun ÷ usable storage per battery.

2.2 × 1.0 ÷ 4.6 = 1
