The simple rule
- Using power in the cold: fine, down to well below freezing.
- Charging in the cold: not below 32°F (0°C). The battery's protection system will refuse.
How people handle winter
| Situation | What works |
|---|---|
| Home or tiny house | Batteries inside the heated space, or a utility room |
| Cabin or shed | An insulated battery box, or a battery closet that stays above freezing |
| Van or bus | Heated batteries, or batteries inside the living space |
| Unheated and freezing | Self-heating lithium batteries |
Winter also means less sun
Cold months are also the darkest. That's why the guides size panels for your darkest month. See yours with the winter sun hours tool.
Questions people ask
What happens if you charge a lithium battery below freezing?
Charging below freezing can permanently damage LiFePO4 cells. Good batteries have a BMS that blocks charging when it's too cold, which protects them but means no charging until they warm up.
Can I keep solar batteries in an unheated shed?
Only if the shed stays above freezing or the batteries are insulated or self-heating. Otherwise keep them indoors.
